About “De Natura deorum”

De Natura deorum (The Nature of the Gods) is a philosophical dialogue written by Cicero in 45 BC. It is divided into three books, each exploring the theology of different philosophical schools. The dialogue examines Stoic, Epicurean, and skeptical views on the nature of the gods. Cicero serves as the narrator but does not actively participate in the discussion. Gaius Velleius presents the Epicurean perspective, while Quintus Lucilius Balbus defends Stoic theology. Gaius Cotta represents Academic skepticism, offering criticisms of both schools. The first book includes Cicero’s introduction, Velleius’ argument for Epicureanism, and Cotta’s responses. The second book focuses on Balbus’ defense of Stoicism. The third book contains Cotta’s critique of Balbus’ claims.
