About “Dei sepolcri”

"Dei Sepolcri" ("Sepulchres") is a poem written by the Italian poet Ugo Foscolo in 1806 and published in 1807. It contains 295 hendecasyllabic verses and is dedicated to the poet Ippolito Pindemonte. The poem was inspired by discussions between Foscolo and Pindemonte about a recent Napoleonic law regarding tombs. While the poem reflects a neoclassical style, it also shows romantic elements, including deep emotion and sudden shifts in direction. It contrasts the power of the imagination with materialist rationalism, and its themes and style have been compared to those of Leopardi. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
