Dhalgren (1975), a novel by Samuel R. Delany, follows a mysterious disaster that has stricken the midwestern American city of Bellona, causing disturbing effects: a burned city block appears intact a week later, clouds cover the sky for weeks before parting to reveal two moons, and a week passes for one person while only a day passes for another. Most inhabitants have fled, but others are drawn to the devastated city, including the Kid, a white/American Indian man who can't remember his own name.
