About “Don Segundo Sombra”
Don Segundo Sombra is a 1926 novel by Argentine writer Ricardo Güiraldes. The story follows a gaucho, a traditional rural worker of the Argentine plains. Unlike José Hernández's Martín Fierro, which romanticizes the gaucho, Güiraldes presents the character in a more realistic light. The novel explores the gaucho as a figure who exists on the edge of history, casting a shadow (sombra) over the development of Argentina. It focuses on the life and experiences of the protagonist without idealizing or dramatizing his role in society. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
