Tennis is Willy Novinsky's central passion, beginning at age four, and she becomes a middle-ranked professional player at twenty-three. She marries Eric Oberdorf, a low-ranked Princeton graduate and fellow tennis player, but their relationship deteriorates under the pressure of competition and an accident that leads to Willy's descent into resentment and despair.
