Downtown follows Michael Barnes, a Florida orange grower in New York on business, as he becomes entangled in a series of violent encounters involving bogus cops, thieves, the mob, and a slimy movie producer beginning on Christmas Eve. The novel portrays Barnes' descent into the dangerous underbelly of New York, where he faces relentless threats and ultimately reveals a dark, lethal side akin to classic hard-boiled protagonists.
