Richard Jury investigates the murder of a wealthy bachelor, Billy Maples, whose death occurs under mysterious circumstances and leads Jury into a complex web of conflicting accounts and false leads. The investigation draws Jury to locations including the Clerkenwell area, the Sussex town of Rye, and Lamb House, where Henry James once lived and worked, while also involving the enigmatic detective Lu Aguilar and Maples's young nephew.
