About “Egmont”

Egmont is a tragedy by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, completed in 1788. Its structure is similar to his earlier play Götz von Berlichingen (1773), and like that work, it shows strong influence from Shakespearean tragedy. However, Egmont presents a different theme, focusing on the downfall of a man who places his trust in the goodness of others. This contrasts with the themes of Götz von Berlichingen, suggesting a shift in Goethe’s approach. The play was later set to music by Beethoven in 1810.
