Elantris was a magnificent city filled with powerful individuals who used magic to help the people of Arelon. However, ten years ago, the magic failed, turning the Elantrians into sickly, weak creatures and leaving the city dark and ruined. The magic, known as Shaod, became a curse. The capital city of Arelon, Kae, tries to ignore the ruined Elantris. Princess Sarene of Teod arrives in Kae for a political marriage with Crown Prince Raoden, but he dies before the wedding, leaving her as a widow. Arelon and Teod face threats from Fjordell, a city ruled by religious fanatics led by high priest Hrathen, who aims to convert Arelon. Sarene now stands alone against Hrathen. Neither she nor Hrathen know that Raoden was taken by the same disease that ruined Elantris and is trapped inside the city. His efforts to build a society for the trapped people set off events that will change Arelon and uncover the truth about Elantris.
