Herman Broder, a refugee and survivor of World War II, finds himself married to three women: Yadwiga, a Polish peasant who hid him from the Nazis; Masha, his beautiful and neurotic true love; and Tamara, his first wife who returns from the dead. Struggling with the complications of his life, Herman moves through Yiddish New York, feeling a constant sense of doom. He deals with each new challenge with a mix of surprise and resignation, caught in a web of relationships and past traumas. The novel explores his emotional journey and the weight of his past.
