About “Eumeswil”
Originally published in 1977, Eumeswil is a novel by Ernst Jünger. It presents a utopian state ruled by the Condor, a dictator who governs from a citadel called the Casbah. The story is told by Venator, a historian who serves as the Condor's night steward. He records conversations in a secret journal, observing the psychology of power and the people around the dictator. Venator also builds a hidden refuge in the mountains, seeking self-sufficiency. He uses a device called the "luminar" to summon historical figures and events. The novel explores themes of power and individualism, reflecting Jünger's concept of the "anarch." Eumeswil is both a tale and a philosophical reflection on history and totalitarianism.
