About “Everyman”

The novel follows the life of a man from his childhood, marked by an early encounter with death on a peaceful beach, through his adult years of professional success as a commercial artist in New York and personal struggles. He is the father of two sons from his first marriage who hate him and a daughter from a second marriage who loves him. He is also the brother of a healthy man whom he envies and the ex-husband of three different women with whom he had troubled relationships. As he ages, he watches friends and peers decline and deals with his own physical problems. By the end, he has become someone he does not want to be. The story is told in a 2006 novel by Philip Roth.
