It is late summer 1793 in Philadelphia, where a fever spreads through the city, beginning near the docks and claiming lives, including that of Polly, a serving girl at the Cook Coffeehouse. Fourteen-year-old Mattie Cook, who had been focused on expanding her family's coffee shop, must confront the illness as it reaches her own home, forcing her to shift her priorities from building her business to surviving the outbreak.
