About “First they came…”
"First They Came" is a poetic version of a 1946 prose piece by Martin Niemöller, a German Lutheran pastor who lived from 1892 to 1984. The work indirectly criticizes the silence of German intellectuals and clergy as the Nazis gradually targeted different groups. It reflects on the consequences of inaction and the failure to resist oppression. The piece has inspired many adaptations in English that follow its original message.
