NYPD sergeant Kathleen Mallory returns to a small town in Louisiana, where her mother was stoned to death seventeen years earlier and her body vanished, leaving only a winged angel in the local cemetery. Upon arriving, Mallory is arrested within hours of her arrival, though she is not involved in the assault, heart attack, or murder that occur shortly after her arrival, as she is there to investigate the circumstances surrounding her mother's death.
