About “Formicarius”
The Formicarius, written by Johannes Nider between 1436 and 1438 during the Council of Florence, was the second book ever printed to address witchcraft. It was first published in 1475 and focused on witchcraft in its fifth section. Unlike later writers, Nider did not focus on the Witches' Sabbath and was doubtful about the idea that witches could fly at night. The book has more than 25 surviving manuscript copies from the 15th and early 16th centuries, including editions from the 1470s to 1692. It is an important source for understanding the early stages of witch trials in Early Modern Europe, particularly during the first half of the 15th century.
