About “Freedom at Midnight”
Seventy years ago, on August 14, 1947, at midnight, the Union Jack was lowered from Viceroy’s House in New Delhi, marking the end of British rule in India. The country gained independence, but the process was marked by violence, riots, and the division of the nation into two separate states. Freedom at Midnight recounts the events leading to Indian independence, focusing on the role of Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy, and the period up to Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. The book, which became an international bestseller, was praised in several countries. This edition includes 20 black-and-white photographs, five maps, a bibliography, and notes. It is dedicated to the memory of Larry Collins, the late writing partner of the author, Dominique Lapierre.
