In 2014, Maia Kobabe, who uses e/em/eir pronouns, began a comic about reading statistics, intending it to be the last autobiographical comic e would ever write. At the time, it was the only aspect of eir life e felt comfortable sharing with strangers. This comic eventually became Gender Queer, a graphic novel published in 2019. The book is an intensely personal account of eir journey of self-identity, covering experiences such as adolescent crushes, confusion and mortification, coming out to family and society, and bonding with friends through gay fanfiction. It also addresses the trauma of pap smears and the challenge of being nonbinary and asexual. Originally created to help eir family understand eir identity, Gender Queer serves as a guide on gender identity for a wider audience.
