About “Gondibert”
Gondibert is an epic poem written by William Davenant. In the poem, Davenant tried to merge the five-act structure of English Renaissance drama with the traditions of epic poetry found in the works of Homer and Virgil. He also aimed to include modern ideas about government and human emotions, drawing largely from the philosophical writings of Thomas Hobbes. Davenant sent drafts of the poem to Hobbes for review.
