Reporter V.I. Warshawski investigates the case of a battered woman found in the street near her home, which leads her into the troubled home of a wealthy Chicago family, the pampered world of a Hollywood star, and a women's prison. The investigation emerges after V.I. nearly runs over the woman on her way home from a party celebrating her friend Murray Ryerson's television debut.
