About “Histoire naturelle des poissons”

Histoire naturelle des poissons is a 22-volume work on ichthyology published between 1828 and 1849 by Georges Cuvier and his student Achille Valenciennes. It documented all fish species known at the time, including 2,311 that were newly described. The project was one of the largest in the field of fish biology. Most of the volumes were published after Cuvier's death. Later, Auguste Duméril added two more volumes in 1865 and 1870, focusing on fish groups Cuvier had not included, such as sharks.
