About “History”

This novel by Elsa Morante centers on Ida Mancuso, a schoolteacher whose husband has died and whose teenage son treats war as his playground. A German soldier rapes her, falls in love with her, and leaves her pregnant with a boy whose survival becomes her passion. Other characters move through a war-torn landscape around them.
