About “Homo ludens”

Homo Ludens is a book originally published in Dutch in 1938 by Johan Huizinga, a Dutch historian and cultural theorist. The book explores the role of play in culture and society, arguing that play is fundamental to the creation of culture. Huizinga suggests that play is not merely a trivial activity but a necessary condition for cultural development. The title comes from the Latin word ludens, the present active participle of ludere, meaning to play. The word ludus—from which ludere is derived—refers to play, sport, school, and practice, and has no direct English equivalent. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
