About “Hortus Eystettensis”

Hortus Eystettensis is a book published by Basilius Besler, a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, in 1613. It documents the plants in the garden of the Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt in Bavaria. The garden was located at the bishop's palace, the Willibaldsburg, and was built across eight terraces that overlooked the city. It was the first botanical garden in Germany and the only one outside of Italy at the time. The garden contained plants from around the world, and it was believed to include all known shrubs and flowering plants known to horticulturalists in the early 17th century.
