Ida Elisabeth is a novel about a woman who marries her teenage sweetheart, Frithjof, to redeem her reputation, only to discover that he is incapable of supporting the family, leading her to work as a dressmaker. After leaving Frithjof when he becomes involved with another woman, she moves with her children to a small town, where she attracts the attention of a successful lawyer, and later faces a reunion with Frithjof when he becomes gravely ill.
