About “If on a winter's night a traveler”

In his 1979 novel Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore, Italo Calvino explores the pleasure of reading through the perspective of a reader who attempts to finish ten different novels but is repeatedly prevented from doing so. Each of the ten novels begins with a different imaginary author, all distinct from one another and from the author of the main work. Calvino focused on representing the joy of reading various genres rather than on the actual texts of the novels. He also emphasized how every book exists in relation to other books, shaped by their presence and the reader's experience. The novel highlights the interaction between readers and the texts they encounter.
