About “International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights”

The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) is a multilateral treaty adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 16 December 1966 through Resolution 2200A (XXI). It entered into force on 3 January 1976. The treaty requires its parties to promote economic, social, and cultural rights for all individuals, including those in Non-Self-Governing and Trust Territories. These rights include labor rights, the right to health, the right to education, and the right to an adequate standard of living. As of August 2025, 173 countries have become parties to the covenant. Five additional countries, including the United States, have signed but not ratified it. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
