About “Into the Wild”

In 1992, Christopher Johnson McCandless left his life behind, giving away $25,000, burning his cash, and abandoning his car and most of his possessions. He traveled to Alaska, where he disappeared into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. Four months later, his body was found by a moose hunter. McCandless had left college in 1991 and traveled through the West and Southwest, inspired by writers like Jack London and John Muir. He abandoned his car in the Mojave Desert, burned his money, and adopted the name Alexander Supertramp. He sought freedom and raw experiences in nature, discarding maps and leaving behind his family. Jon Krakauer's Into the Wild explores McCandless's life and death, examining the motivations that led him into the wilderness. Krakauer investigates the factors that drove McCandless, including the appeal of the American wilderness and the challenges faced by young men seeking adventure. McCandless's death was seen as the result of his naivety and mistakes, but Krakauer presents a thoughtful and non-sentimental account of his journey. The book reveals the risks and renunciations of McCandless's quest, offering a powerful and emotional narrative.
