About “Invisible Man”

Invisible Man is a 1952 novel by Ralph Ellison. It follows a young Black man from the South who is naive about racism. He attends college but is expelled after showing a white benefactor the harsh realities of Black life. He moves to Harlem and joins the Communist-led Brotherhood, where he gains attention but remains confused. As he works for the group, he meets various people and faces situations that challenge his understanding of race and identity. Racial tensions rise, leading him into a riot that forces him into a manhole. There, in isolation, he gains self-awareness about his invisibility and identity. He decides to write his story and promises to rejoin the world.
