About “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear”
"It Came Upon the Midnight Clear" is a poem and Christmas carol written by Edmund Sears in 1849. Sears was a pastor at the Unitarian Church in Wayland, Massachusetts. In 1850, he asked Richard Storrs Willis to create a tune for the poem, resulting in the "Carol" melody. This combination became the most popular version in the United States. In Commonwealth countries, the lyrics are often set to "Noel," an adaptation by Arthur Sullivan based on an English melody. The work is both a literary piece and a Christmas carol.
