About “Ōjōyōshū”

The Ōjōyōshū was a medieval Buddhist text composed in 985 by the Japanese monk Genshin. It focused on Buddhist practices related to rebirth in the Pure Land of Amida Buddha, using earlier Chinese Buddhist texts and sutras like the Contemplation Sutra. Genshin promoted a combination of practices, including sutra recitation and visual meditation of Amitabha Buddha, while later Pure Land sects emphasized the nembutsu, or recitation of Amida's name. The text also included detailed descriptions of Hell realms and the suffering caused by harmful actions. Its influence extended to Japanese Buddhist art and later writings. Shinran, founder of Jōdo Shinshū Buddhism, wrote a commentary on the Ōjōyōshū, and Hōnen was introduced to Pure Land teachings through Genshin's work. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
