A 1979 novel by Frederik Pohl explores a future where three competing power blocs—Food Bloc, Fuel Bloc, and People Bloc—face a desperate struggle in a war-torn and resource-starved 21st century. The discovery of a habitable world offers hope, but when the blocs send representatives to Jem, a planet with three intelligent species, they bring their conflicts with them. Instead of finding unity, they export their rivalries to the new world. The novel, subtitled 'The Making of a Utopia,' is considered one of Pohl's most powerful works.
