The humorous ballad The Diverting History of John Gilpin, Showing How He Went Further Than He Intended and Came Safe Home Again, recounts the adventures of John Gilpin, a successful London linen draper, who sets out on an excursion to Edmonton with his wife and family. He rides a horse instead of traveling in a chaise, but the horse bolts, carrying him to Ware in Hertfordshire and then back to London.
