About “Kaitai Shinsho”
Kaitai Shinsho is a medical text translated into Japanese during the Edo period, written by Sugita Genpaku and published by Suharaya Ichibee in 1774. Comprising four volumes of text and one of illustrations, written in kanbun style, it is based on a translation of the Dutch Ontleedkundige Tafelen, itself derived from Johann Adam Kulmus's Latin Tabulae Anatomicae, published before 1722 in Gdańsk. It was the first full-blown translation from a Western language in Japan. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
