Kidnapped is an adventure story that set the standard for thrillers involving escape and suspense. It is set in 1751 and follows the journey of David Balfour and Alan Breck as they travel through the Highlands of Scotland. The story is based on real events. The novel was written by Robert Louis Stevenson in 1886. He wrote it to make money while living as an invalid in Bournemouth. Stevenson was proud of the book, and he inscribed a presentation copy with a couplet expressing his pride. The book was illustrated by Rowland Hilder, who is known for his paintings of the English countryside. His illustrations for Kidnapped were first published in 1930 but have been out of print for a long time. The story centers on a sixteen-year-old orphan who is kidnapped by his uncle but later escapes and joins the Scottish highlanders in their struggle against English rule.
