About “Kindred”

Dana, a modern Black woman, is transported from her home in California to the antebellum South while celebrating her twenty-sixth birthday. She is summoned to save Rufus, a white man and the son of a plantation owner, who is drowning. Dana is repeatedly pulled through time to the slave quarters, and each journey becomes longer and more dangerous. As she struggles to survive, the risks to her life grow, and it becomes unclear if she will return to her own time at all. The novel, Kindred by Octavia E. Butler, explores themes of slavery, race, and survival.
