About “Krista Purana”
Krista Purana is an epic poem that recounts the life of Jesus Christ, written by English Jesuit priest Thomas Stephens. It combines the Marathi and Konkani languages and follows the structure of Hindu puranas, retelling the story of mankind from creation to the time of Jesus. The work consists of 11,000 stanzas, each containing four verses, and was widely used in churches, where it was sung on special occasions until the 1930s. Though no original copy has been found, it is believed to have been first published in 1616 at the College of Rachol. It was later re-published in 1649 and 1654 after Stephens' death.
