The story begins with the discovery of a golden sphere in the Antarctic ice containing the frozen bodies of a man and a woman from a civilization that perished 900,000 years ago. The United Nations sends an international team of scientists to investigate, and after the woman, Elea, is awakened, the scientists learn that her people lived in an advanced, idyllic civilization destroyed by a prehistoric atomic holocaust.
