About “Letters of a Portuguese Nun”

The Letters of a Portuguese Nun was first published anonymously in Paris in 1669 by Claude Barbin. The work is considered epistolary fiction, consisting of five letters attributed to Gabriel-Joseph de La Vergne, comte de Guilleragues. He was a minor noble, diplomat, and secretary to the Prince of Conti. Guilleragues was also known as a friend of Madame de Sévigné, the poet Boileau, and the dramatist Jean Racine. The letters are believed to have been written by him, though the authorship was not disclosed at the time of publication. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
