About “Letters of Jonathan Oldstyle, gent”
The Letters of Jonathan Oldstyle, Gent. (1802) is a collection of nine letters written by Washington Irving under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle. The letters first appeared in the New York Morning Chronicle on November 15, 1802. The newspaper was politically oriented and partially owned by Aaron Burr, with Irving's brother Peter serving as editor. The letters were published at irregular intervals, ending on April 23, 1803. They critique marriage, social customs, clothing, and culture in early 19th-century New York City. The collection marks Irving's first publication in print.
