About “Lexicon Universale”

The Lexicon Universale of 1698 is an encyclopedia written by Johann Jacob Hofmann of Basel, a humanist scholar who lived from 1635 to 1706. It was published in four volumes, each containing 1,000 pages. The work covers a wide range of subjects, including sacred and secular history, chronology, geography of the old and new world, genealogies of famous families, mythology, rituals, and the antiquities of ancient times. It also includes descriptions of animals, plants, metals, stones, and gems. The publication was produced in Leiden by several printers, including Jacob Hackius, Cornel Boutesteyn, Petrus Vander Aa, and Joard Luchtmans. The title indicates that it was an expanded and more complete edition. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
