About “Libro de los seres imaginarios”
Jorge Luis Borges, often with collaborator Guerrero, created 82 descriptions of mythical creatures in An Anthology of Fantastic Zoology, first published in 1954. These include beings like the Borametz, a lamb-shaped plant with golden fleece, and the Simurgh, an immortal bird nesting in the tree of science. A 1967 edition added 34 more entries and illustrations. The 1969 English edition included fresh translations and new illustrations by Caldecott-winner Sis. The book features creatures that serve as metaphors for Borges’s philosophical reflections. In the preface, Borges and Guerrero note that the meaning of the dragon, like the universe, remains unknown. The book captures the vastness of the universe within its pages.
