Like Water for Chocolate is a novel by Mexican novelist Laura Esquivel. The story centers on Tita, a young woman who is forbidden from marrying her lover, Pedro, due to a family tradition that requires the youngest daughter to care for her mother until her death. Tita expresses her emotions and desires through cooking. Esquivel uses magical realism to blend the supernatural with everyday life. The novel received the American Booksellers Book of the Year Award for Adult Trade in 1994.
