About “Litany of Re”
The Litany of Re is an ancient Egyptian funerary text from the New Kingdom, used primarily in the tombs of pharaohs or highly favored nobles. It was written on the inside of tombs to guide the deceased. The text is divided into two parts: the first part honors the sun god Ra through 75 different forms, while the second part includes prayers where the pharaoh identifies with nature and deities, especially Ra. It was developed during the Eighteenth Dynasty and emphasizes the pharaoh’s connection to the sun god and other deities. The text was used in tomb entrances starting with Seti I, but its earliest known appearances are in the burial chamber of Thutmose III and the tomb of his vizier, Useramun.
