Lorenzaccio is a French Romantic play written by Alfred de Musset in 1834. Set in 16th-century Florence, it tells the story of Lorenzino de' Medici, who assassinated his cousin, the tyrant Alessandro de' Medici. To gain the Duke's trust, Lorenzino engaged in reckless behavior, which led to him being called "Lorenzaccio," a name filled with contempt. Although he succeeds in killing Alessandro, he realizes he cannot return to his former life. His act fails to inspire a successful revolution, and the people do not benefit from the assassination.
