When Louisiana Elefante's granny wakes her up in the middle of the night to say they must leave home immediately, Louisiana is initially unconcerned, as her granny often has sudden ideas. However, this time, they do not return, and Louisiana becomes separated from her best friends, Raymie and Beverly, as she travels with her granny to a small Georgia town, where she encounters a motel owner, a minister, and a boy with a crow on his shoulder, leading her to question whether she is destined only for good-byes.
