Machinal is a 1928 play written by American playwright and journalist Sophie Treadwell. It was inspired by the real-life case of Ruth Snyder, a woman who was convicted and executed for murder. The play premiered on Broadway and was directed by Arthur Hopkins. The production is regarded as a significant example of Expressionist theatre in American stage history.
