About “Madame Butterfly”
"Madame Butterfly" is a short story written by American lawyer and writer John Luther Long. The story was inspired by the experiences of Long's sister, Jennie Correll, who traveled to Japan with her husband, a Methodist missionary. It was first published in 1898 in the Century Magazine and later adapted into a play in 1900. The story served as the basis for Giacomo Puccini's 1904 opera Madama Butterfly.
