About “Madame X”

Madame X is a 1908 play written by French playwright Alexandre Bisson. It was later novelized in English and staged in America. The play was adapted for the screen sixteen times over sixty-five years, including versions in Tagalog, Greek, Arabic, and Spanish. It has been noted as an example of a literary tradition that portrays the mother figure as being "excessively punished for slight deviation from her maternal role."
