About “Maelzel's Chess Player”

Edgar Allan Poe wrote an essay in 1836 titled "Maelzel's Chess Player," in which he exposed the deception of a famous chess-playing automaton known as The Turk. The device had gained widespread attention in Europe and the United States after being created by Wolfgang von Kempelen in 1769. The Turk was later brought to the U.S. in 1825 by Johann Nepomuk Mälzel, who had acquired it after von Kempelen's death. Poe's essay revealed that the machine was not a true automaton but a cleverly constructed illusion. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
